"Don't use passive voice. Don't hallucinate citations. Don't summarize when I asked for analysis."

You've written prompts like this. Everyone has. It feels logical. Tell the model what to avoid and it should avoid it, right?

The research says otherwise. And the gap between intuition and reality here is where you'll find one of the most useful prompting techniques that most guides get wrong.

The Pink Elephant in Your Prompt

Tell someone "don't think about a pink elephant." You know what happens next.

LLMs have the same problem, and it's been formally studied. Castricato et al. (2024) defined the "Pink Elephant Problem" -- when you tell an LLM to avoid a topic, it paradoxically brings it up more often. Their fix required fine-tuning on 162,000 synthetic conversations. That's not a prompting technique. That's a training intervention.

At inference time -- meaning when you're actually writing prompts -- negative instructions are unreliable. The model processes "don't use passive voice" by activating its representation of passive voice. You've just made the thing you're avoiding more salient.

Here's what makes this worse: bigger models handle negation less reliably, at least up to a capability threshold. The NeQA benchmark (Zhang et al., ACL 2023) found inverse scaling on negated questions. GPT-3 family models got worse at negation tasks as they got larger, even while standard QA performance scaled from 0.44 to 0.95 accuracy. "Don't do X" becomes less predictable as models get more capable.

The Guardrail-to-Handcuff Problem

So you add more constraints. More "don'ts." Tighter guardrails.

This works -- until it doesn't.

A 2025 study on "Prompt Sculpting" found that constraint-based rules improved GPT-4o accuracy from 93% to 97%. Same constraints on GPT-5 dropped performance from 96.36% to 94%. The researchers called this the "Guardrail-to-Handcuff" transition. Constraints that help mid-tier models make advanced models rigid and overly literal.

The implication: your carefully crafted constraint prompts have a shelf life. As models improve, heavy constraint sets become counterproductive. The optimal strategy shifts toward fewer, higher-quality constraints for more capable models.

What Actually Works: Positive Constraint Specification

The real technique isn't "tell the LLM what NOT to do." It's constraint specification with positive framing -- defining the boundaries of what you want by describing the output space, not the exclusion zone.

Same intent. Different framing. Measurably different results.

Here's a concrete example. Say you're generating a technical analysis and you're tired of getting fluffy summaries with hedging language.

The Naive Prompt:

Analyze the performance characteristics of PostgreSQL's JSONB indexing.
Don't summarize. Don't use hedging language like "might" or "could."
Don't write an introduction paragraph. Don't use passive voice.
Don't include generic advice.

Why This Fails: Four negative instructions, each one activating the exact pattern you're trying to suppress. The model is now thinking about summarizing, hedging, introductions, and passive voice. You've seeded the output with everything you wanted to avoid.

The Constraint-Specified Prompt:

Analyze the performance characteristics of PostgreSQL's JSONB indexing.

Constraints:
- Start with the most specific technical finding. No preamble.
- Use active voice in every sentence.
- State conclusions directly: "X is faster than Y" not "X might be faster."
- Every claim must include a measurable detail (query time, index size, row count).
- Target audience: database engineers evaluating JSONB for production use.

Why This Works: Every constraint describes what the output should contain, not what it shouldn't. The model builds toward a target rather than navigating around obstacles. The audience specification further anchors the tone and depth without a single "don't."

Expected Output:

GIN indexes on JSONB columns in PostgreSQL 16 add 15-20% write overhead per INSERT compared to unindexed JSONB, but reduce containment queries (@>) from sequential scan times of 800ms+ to under 5ms on tables exceeding 1M rows. The jsonb_path_ops operator class cuts index size by 40-60% compared to default GIN by storing only path hashes, though it sacrifices support for key-existence (?) queries. For mixed read-write workloads, partial GIN indexes on frequently queried paths outperform full-column indexes...

Notice: direct, specific, no hedging, no preamble. The positive constraints produced exactly what the negative constraints were trying to prevent.

The RCCF Pattern: Where Constraints Go in Your Prompt

Constraint placement matters more than most people realize. Research on prompt sensitivity shows LLM performance can drop by up to 61.8% when prompts are subtly reworded while conveying the same intent (Dec 2025). The difference between "don't use passive voice" and "avoid passive constructions" can produce wildly different outputs.

The RCCF framework (Role-Context-Constraint-Format) addresses this by front-loading constraints. Practitioners report that specifying output constraints in the first section of a prompt cuts revision rates by roughly 60% compared to burying them at the end.

The Prompt:

You are a senior security analyst writing an incident report.

Constraints:
- Active voice only.
- Each finding must state: what happened, what was affected, severity (Critical/High/Medium/Low), and remediation status.
- No speculation. If root cause is unconfirmed, state "root cause under investigation" and list the two most probable hypotheses with supporting evidence.
- Maximum 200 words per finding.

Context: Our web application firewall logged 47,000 blocked requests from a single IP range over 6 hours targeting /api/auth endpoints.

Task: Write the initial findings section of the incident report.

Why This Works: Constraints come before context and task. The model establishes its operating boundaries before it encounters the material it needs to process. Every constraint is positive and measurable -- "active voice only" not "don't use passive," "maximum 200 words" not "don't be too long."

Expected Output:

Finding 1: Credential Stuffing Attack Against Authentication API Severity: High

Between 02:15 and 08:22 UTC on March 27, the WAF blocked 47,312 POST requests from the 198.51.100.0/24 CIDR range targeting /api/auth/login and /api/auth/token-refresh. The requests used rotating User-Agent strings across 847 unique values and attempted credential pairs at a rate of 131 requests per minute. No successful authentications occurred from this range during the attack window. Root cause under investigation. Most probable hypotheses: (1) automated credential stuffing using a leaked credential database, supported by the pair rotation pattern and consistent endpoint targeting; (2) reconnaissance probing for rate-limit bypass, supported by the deliberate request pacing below our 150/min threshold...

When Negative Constraints Still Make Sense

I'm not saying never use "don't." There are specific cases where exclusion is the right tool.

Factual boundaries work well as negatives. "Do not reference any client by name" or "do not include pricing information" are binary constraints where the model either includes the thing or it doesn't. There's no spectrum of compliance.

Format exclusions can work too. "Do not use bullet points" is unambiguous enough that models handle it reliably.

The pattern to avoid is using negatives for style and tone. "Don't be formal" is vague and activates formality. "Write as if explaining to a colleague over coffee" gives the model something to build toward.

The Takeaway You Can Use Today

Next time you catch yourself writing "don't" in a prompt, pause. Flip it. Describe what you want the output to look like, not what you want it to avoid.

Your constraints should read like a spec sheet, not a list of complaints. Front-load them. Make them measurable. And as models get more capable, use fewer of them -- the best constraint is a clear description of the target.
